Cambridgeshire Churches

Simon Jenkins' top Cambridgeshire Churches

a banner in Cottenham

I'm not an enormous fan of Simon Jenkins' England's Thousand Best Churches, and not merely because the author comes across as an unpleasant, right-wing fool (listen to him on the radio, some time). I think he's too harsh on East Anglian churches, myself (giving Blythburgh in Suffolk only three stars? Madness!), and far too lenient on the home counties.

His tone is often arrogant and his research seems less than thorough - indeed, one of his Cambridgeshire churches (Walsoken) is in Norfolk.

Still, it has nice pictures, and on the whole I agree with the churches he prioritises, even if I'm not quite sure about the order he puts them in.

Three Stars ***
Bottisham, Ickleton, March, Walsoken, Wisbech

Two Stars **
Balsham, Burwell, Cambridge All Saints, Harlton, Kirtling

One Star *
Cambridge Great St Mary, Hildersham, Isleham, Swaffham Prior, Trumpington
